Aspen Manor: A home rooted in Oakham’s community

Aspen Manor is more than just a care home – it is a place deeply connected to the heart of Oakham, a town rich in history, natural beauty, and a strong sense of belonging. It was this unique blend of heritage and community spirit that made Oakham the perfect location for our home.

Officially opened in April 2022 by The Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr. Sarah Furness, Aspen Manor was designed to complement the welcoming nature of the town. Here, residents don’t just receive the highest standards of care – they remain part of the wider Oakham community, enjoying everything this picturesque town has to offer. From lively market days to peaceful afternoons by Rutland Water, Oakham provides the perfect balance of history, culture, and countryside tranquillity.

A town with a rich history

Oakham is a town steeped in history, where medieval landmarks and local traditions stand side by side with modern-day charm. At its heart is Oakham Castle, one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in England. The castle is famous for its unique collection of ceremonial horseshoes, a tradition dating back to the 12th century, where visiting nobility present a horseshoe to the town—a custom that continues to this day.

Just a short stroll away, All Saints’ Church dominates the skyline with its beautiful medieval structure, offering a glimpse into Oakham’s deep-rooted heritage. The town is full of hidden historical gems, from charming old coaching inns to quaint streets lined with traditional stone cottages.

For those who enjoy exploring history, Oakham provides endless opportunities to learn, discover, and immerse in the stories of the past.

A thriving market town

Life in Oakham revolves around its bustling market culture, where fresh local produce, artisan crafts, and a vibrant atmosphere create a true sense of community. The town’s weekly markets are a highlight, drawing locals and visitors alike to enjoy everything from farm-fresh vegetables to handmade goods. The historic 16th-century Buttercross, a distinctive stone shelter in the town centre, serves as a reminder of Oakham’s longstanding tradition as a trading hub.

Wandering through Oakham’s streets, you’ll find an array of independent boutiques, charming cafes, and family-run businesses. The town prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere, with friendly shop owners, lively events, and a sense of community that makes Oakham a truly special place to live and visit.

Surrounded by natural beauty

Just a short drive or leisurely walk from the town centre lies Rutland Water, one of Europe’s largest man-made lakes and one of the region’s most cherished attractions. The lake is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering walking and cycling trails, birdwatching, sailing, and fishing. Whether residents prefer an active afternoon exploring the scenic trails or a quiet moment watching the sunset over the water, Rutland Water is a breathtaking escape into nature.

For those who appreciate gardens and green spaces, Barnsdale Gardens, created by the late Geoff Hamilton of BBC’s Gardeners’ World, is a wonderful local gem. With 38 individual gardens to explore, it provides inspiration, tranquillity, and a delightful day out for residents and families alike.

A destination for food and drink

Rutland is proudly known as “The County of Good Taste,” and Oakham is at the heart of its thriving food scene. The town boasts award-winning restaurants, traditional country pubs, and cosy cafes, all serving fresh, locally sourced produce.

For those who enjoy fine dining, there are plenty of options, from elegant restaurants serving seasonal gourmet dishes to classic pubs offering hearty, home-cooked meals. Afternoon teas, Sunday roasts, and freshly baked pastries from independent bakeries ensure that there is something to suit every taste.

Aspen Manor residents who enjoy dining out with family and friends will find plenty of options in Oakham to make any visit a special occasion.
