A town with a rich history
Oakham is a town steeped in history, where medieval landmarks and local traditions stand side by side with modern-day charm. At its heart is Oakham Castle, one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in England. The castle is famous for its unique collection of ceremonial horseshoes, a tradition dating back to the 12th century, where visiting nobility present a horseshoe to the town—a custom that continues to this day.
Just a short stroll away, All Saints’ Church dominates the skyline with its beautiful medieval structure, offering a glimpse into Oakham’s deep-rooted heritage. The town is full of hidden historical gems, from charming old coaching inns to quaint streets lined with traditional stone cottages.
For those who enjoy exploring history, Oakham provides endless opportunities to learn, discover, and immerse in the stories of the past.
